Two patriotic Liberians—my late grandparents, Matilda Amelia Jackson Woodson and George W. D. Woodson, natives of Careysburg, Liberia—settled in Todee in the early 1950s as missionary evangelists and educators. At the time, there were neither schools nor churches in the nearby communities.
Their mission was dual: spiritual evangelism and providing quality primary education to children in Todee and throughout Liberia. The need to continue their vision is more evident now than ever.
My grandparents established Nyehn Public School #2, operating it in partnership with the Liberian government and with support from their missionary affiliates. They also founded Mount Olive Baptist Church, aligning it with the Baptist Convention with the assistance of Matilda’s god-brother, President William R. Tolbert Jr., and provided a boarding facility for children.
Unfortunately, the school, church, and boarding facilities were destroyed during the civil war in Liberia. While a UN/NGO reconstructed the school, the boarding facility and church were not restored.
The Woodson Vision For Children Foundation (WVFCF) is committed to continuing the legacy of Matilda and George Woodson. Our mission is to identify and implement projects that serve children in Liberia and beyond, including the school, boarding facilities, church, and clinic that the foundation is set to reinstitute.
